Real organic traffic and a close topic. DR can be inflated, but traffic from Google is much harder to fake.

Can I get a link from a site with no traffic?

As a one-off link to diversify your profile, yes. But most of your links should come from sites that real people visit.

Identical templates across different sites, no contacts or authors, a domain that used to belong to another project (check the Wayback Machine), and outbound links to sites on unrelated topics.

Link profile DR / DA of 15 or higher Not the main metric, but it helps filter out very weak sites. +8 Few outbound links on the page The fewer links on a page, the more weight each one gets. +8 Fewer linked-to domains than referring domains A site that links out to everyone looks like a link farm. +6

Red flags Casino, betting, pharma or adult content Sharing a neighborhood with these sites hurts your link profile. −40 Looks like a PBN: identical templates, no contacts, expired domain Google finds networks of satellite sites and zeroes them out. −40 The site openly sells links ("guest posts for sale") Google devalues these sites among the first. −30 Traffic crashed after the latest update Most likely the site has been hit by a penalty. −20

Why check the donor

A link from a weak or spammy site will do nothing at best and trigger a penalty at worst. That is why you should look at the full picture instead of one metric like DR: traffic, topic, activity and a clean link profile.
